In last week’s newsletter,
Doug Boulware bragged on a couple of our Recording Connection apprentices who were mentored by
Donny Baker at
ES Audio in Glendale, CA, and who have since become established figures at the studio. One of those graduates is
Jesse Rhodes, who has gone on to become head engineer at the studio, and has even mentored some students himself! This week, we thought it would be a great idea to follow up by letting Jesse share in his own words where he’s at now, and tell us how Recording Connection’s mentor-apprentice approach helped him get where he is today!
“I got started through Recording Connection in 2011. I always wanted to work in music and production, and Recording Connection provided me with the opportunity to pursue it. For the first time I found myself taking my studies seriously, and soon got noticed by my mentor, Donny Baker. When I completed my studies, I got hired at that studio, ES Audio, where I have been working as the head engineer for about 3 years now. Through that, I got the opportunity to work with some great artists, such as T-Boz from TLC, Sharon Leal, Jedward, and YouTube phenom Shane Dawson. I’ve also gotten several placements in movies through my work, and mentored other students coming in from Recording Connection.
“As much as I love producing and writing for other artists, my main project right now is my duo group, Dire Docks. We recently released an EP called ‘In Waves,’ with a music video of the single ‘Georgia Line,’ which is featured in Shane Dawson’s comedy ‘Not Cool’, which is number 2 on the comedy charts right now.
“It’s been really intense getting it all ready to release on time, and I have my training to thank for all of it. Without Recording Connection, Donny, and my growing through the work I’ve done at ES Audio, I don’t think I would have been where I am today. I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve produced, and I don’t think that I could have ever imagined all the things I’ve gotten to do and achieved in the past 3 years. It’s been an incredible ride. I’m really excited to see where it all leads.
“If I was going to leave the current and future students at Recording Connection with one bit of advice, it would be, ‘Keep at it.’ If you really believe in what you do, and that you have something to offer, you will get where you want to go. It might not happen the exact way you envisioned, but you will get there. Just keep pushing. Show that you want to be where you are, and put in the work. You never know who you’ll meet or work with.”
The
Recording Connection is known for getting our students’ feet in the door of real recording studios. Jesse Rhodes is a great example of what happens when you make the most of that opportunity! We’re very proud of Jesse and all he’s accomplished.
