Student Successes
Glen Sobel Recording Connection apprentice Syreeta Hall, who recently began her apprenticeship thanks to the Pensado’s Place scholarship, has not only been making great progress on her studies, but has also had the opportunity to make some great connections and work with some high-profile people as well! “I have been quite busy lately and thoroughly enjoying my time at ES Audio with Donny [Baker] and the gang,” she says. “I have been steadily working through the lessons and I just recently received ProTools. It has been great learning new things to do with it, especially at the studio where they have an HD system.”   Recently, Syreeta had the opportunity to assist with setup for a drum tracking session with Alice Cooper’s drummer, and also met Michael Jackson’s niece Yashi Brown who came to the studio to set her poetry to music and to record an audio book. She was also on hand to observe the setup as a TV crew came into ES Audio to shoot a scene for a reality show starting rapper YoYo! Keep up the great work, Syreeta!

Recording Connection alumnus Eugene Kim talks post-production audio at Media Right!
Media Right ProductionsBecause our students are trained in the workplace, they often wind up getting hired by the studios where they did their apprenticeships. For Recording Connection graduate Eugene Kim, his 2012 apprenticeship at Media Right Productions in New York City has turned into a rewarding career. After graduating, not only was he hired by the studio, but Eugene has since moved into the lead editor position, doing post-production audio for everything from television commercials to feature films—even doing post-production sound for a national Best Buy spot!   For other graduates who might be interested in post-production audio as a specialty, Eugene suggests checking out the Manhattan Edit Workshop. Through this workshop, Eugene has met new clients and like-minded artists as well as getting further Avid certification for his specialty.   Eugene speaks highly of his experience with the Recording Connection’s apprenticeship approach. “I think for a trade or craft, apprenticeships are the way to go,” he says. “Through the program, I really figured out exactly what I wanted to do.”   You can check out Eugene’s website at 829prdx.com.

Announcement
In our monthly “mystery supporter” contests, we’ve recently revealed that entertainment industry legends Hans Zimmer and Oliver Stone are endorsing the Recording Radio and Film Connection and the way we train our students. Thanks to all of you who sent in emails to guess our latest “new best friend!.”   The answer is… Grant Heslov!!   Grant HeslovGrant is a major actor, producer, writer and director in the Hollywood scene, frequently working with major players like George Clooney and Ben Affleck. Recent producer credits include The Monuments Men (2014), August: Osage County (2013), and 2012’s Argo, which won the Oscar for Best Picture. He also produced and directed 2009’s The Men Who Stare At Goats, and produced The Ides of March (2011) and Good Night, Good Luck (2005).   We are thrilled that Grant Heslov has endorsed our mentor-apprentice teaching approach—but that’s not all. Grant has also offered to hear film pitches from our Film Connection apprentices, which means if you enroll in the Film Connection, you could be pitching your own script to an Oscar-winning film producer!

electroganicWe are pleased to announce a new mentor for Recording Connection students: Bob Wright of Electroganic Media in Norfolk, VA!  More than just a recording studio, Electroganic Media is a collective of musicians, sound engineers, photographers, graphic artists, videographers and others making it something of a one-stop shop for a variety of media clients.  This will no doubt give our recording apprentices opportunities to cross-pollinate into other areas that require professional audio skills.    Welcome, Bob, and thank you!

Apprentice News & Media

Since winning the Pensado’s Place scholarship and starting his apprenticeship at ES Audio in Los Angeles, Peter DeWitt is wasting no time in making the most of the opportunity. “I’m starting up my own production house and studio team ‘Salt Lamp City Collective,’ he says. “Our goal is to develop artists — from start to finish we write the songs, produce the songs, press kits, bios, websites, and release content. Our artists are mostly young hip-hop and R&B people, some mainstream stuff, pop, dance, some indie stuff.”   With the many connections Peter has already made, he was able to throw a launch party for Salt Lamp City Collective last weekend.   Meanwhile, Peter is fully enjoying his apprenticeship and learning a lot. “Donny [Baker] is teaching me all about mixing!” he says. “We like to use a lot of experimental sounds. I’m so stoked about this scholarship! Thank you guys for everything!”   Salt Lamp City on Facebook | www.saltlampcitycollective.com | Tumblr | Instagram: saltlampcity | Twitter: @SaltLampCity
