Apprentices in Action

Since completing his Recording Connection apprenticeship with Donny Baker at ES Audio in Los Angeles, Robert Wiley has landed a coveted trainee position at Remote Control Productions, the studios of famed film composer Hans Zimmer! Robert checked in with us recently: “I finished up my first week at Hans Zimmer studio and it was interesting to say the least… I really can’t get into a lot of detail on what’s going on there, but some of the composers there are working on some major projects for film and TV. Hans will be out of town until later in the month but I was able to see his room which was incredible – there is a lot of history is there. A lot of the interns (not to be confused with a Recording Connection apprenticeship) there ask me, “Where did you go to school?” and “What’s your background?” I mention the Recording Connection and how I was matched up with a mentor and how it was hands-on but at your own pace and they think that was so great. So you might be getting some calls from possible students because I do brag about the school.” Thanks for the kudos, Robert!

“Today is the last day of my apprenticeship. I’ve been at Make It Happen for 7 months now and I can see a huge difference from where I was [then] to where I am now. RRFC gave me a certificate so I am officially a graduate of their program. Now, I just have to decide what to do with this new skill that I have…I helped edit a few different pieces over the last two weeks and I still go into each project feeling like I am in over my head, but once I start the process, each step has started to come naturally. I am exponentially faster than I was when I started my apprenticeship which was the goal, so I feel like I’ve gotten to a place where it is now my responsibility to keep up my skill and continue learning about the new technology and programs that are available to editors. I also got my first paid editing job from Film Connection. I’m transcribing about 7 hours’ worth of interviews and it is taking forever. I can type pretty quickly and it still is just a long, slow process. So, that’s it… I will let you guys know when I win my first Oscar!”
