Issue #31
by L. Swift and Jeff McQ
A few weeks ago, we shared that Film Connection apprentice Shameka Cole had the opportunity to direct a music video for Maybach Music Group hip-hop artist Tracy T. Shemeka got a phone call last week letting her know that the music video recently appeared on MTV’s hip-hop channel, MTV Jams! “I was so hype to hear that!” she says. “I remember watching MTV Jams all the time back in the day.”

Shameka recalls shooting the video itself presented some challenges. “We had a club scene with a lot of extras which was a little hectic,” she says, “but I just spoke with the camera guys and the production team and took control to keep things organized.”

We LOVE it when top-shelf industry professionals elect to teach our students! The Film Connection is pleased to welcome one of our newest mentors: producer/director Sergio Valenzuela, owner of Silver Phoenix Productions in Nashville, Tennessee! Silver Phoenix (or SPHX, for short) is a Telly Award-winning company that provides high quality production services for projects ranging from short films to music videos to commercials to full-length features, featuring a strong creative team that can provide Hollywood-level production at any stage of the project, from concept to completion.

We’re thrilled to have Sergio teaching our film apprentices in the Nashville area, and we’re excited to see what our students will accomplish under his mentorship. Welcome, Sergio!

Recent Recording Connection graduate Ayaz Ismail made a trip to L.A. this month to discuss his career goals and meet with like-minded artists and producers in the industry. Since making the trip, he’s been contacted for a Skype interview for a position at Hans Zimmer’s film scoring company Remote Control Productions! Good on you, Ayaz—you’re on your way!

Since Recording Connection Student Services helped recent graduate Victor Mancusi polish up his resume, he’s reported back that it’s helped to land him a ground floor position at a local recording studio, Ardent Recording! “It’s a small studio,” he says, “but at least it was a sure thing and a good place to start.” Congrats, Victor!

Recording Connection apprentice Jason Hoanshelt reports that things are going very well with his mentor, David Mikeal at Studio Live USA in Orlando. “I’m learning pretty much everything about audio engineering,” he says. “Recording, basic radio, films and TV, more in-depth with music tracking, mixing and mastering.” Jason says he’s also working on some 80s retro-themed music for an upcoming smartphone video game, and working on some other side projects as well. Way to go, Jason!

Collin McCombs is currently working through the Recording Connection master’s program, and says things are going great! “I believe these past months have been crucial in my education,” he says. “I love that my mentor Aaron Connor makes every little thing a learning experience. He teaches me a lot about engineering, the industry, and studio ownership.” In addition to his apprenticeship at Cypher Sound Studio, Collin is working as an assistant at the studio, where he just finished mastering a song for an upcoming EP for the band Buyer Beware. He’s also built a home studio and has been working on projects there with some of his friends. “I still have a lot to learn,” says Collin, “but I feel like I have strong future in this industry all because of the Recording Connection and my mentor.”
