Issue #30
by L. Swift and Jeff McQ
Founded by Matt Black and Jonathan More (aka Coldcut), and managed by Peter Quicke, London-based Ninja Tune has established itself as one of the most credible independent labels in the UK.
Ninja Tune is currently offering amazing work opportunities this fall for business-minded music industry apprentices, and is seeking Recording Connection graduates to fill several work-experience openings. If you’re interested, get in touch with Career Services for the details!
Since finishing his course, Recording Connection graduate Dan Walsh has had nothing but good things to say about his apprenticeship experience. “I had a great experience at KDS Music Studios in Orlando,” he says. “David Mikeal (my mentor) gave me so much vital information about engineering and the overall music business.”
As an apprentice, Dan quickly became part of the day-to-day operation of the studio, meeting and working with some high-profile artists along the way—including Philip Michael Thomas from Miami Vice! “David was able to guide me through the entire recording and mixing process with real clients,” says Dan. “He showed me a lot of old-school methods of recording and mixing that helped simplify the process, which allowed me to be more concerned with the important parts of the mixing process.”
As a finishing touch on his apprenticeship, for his final project, Dan had the opportunity of assisting David through the entire process of recording and engineering the debut album for a local rock band. “I had so much fun in my sessions with the band,” he says. “I could not have been given these opportunities in a classroom, and I feel like I learned so much more from the hands-on training that this program provides.”

David Weiss at industry mag SonicScoop, recently sat down with Matt Linesch to interview him about his success working with Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros and mixing at Ocean Way Recording.
Here’s an excerpt from the article:
“What makes Matt Linesch shine so bright isn’t the obvious things. Yes, his mix credits are captivating – including the utterly distinctive 2013 self-titled album Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, as well as the band’s 2012 effort Here, and the Golden Globe-winning soundtrack to ‘All Is Lost’ starring Robert Redford, plus clients including Dave Mason, Fool’s Gold, Australian band Wagons, Insects vs. Robots, and The Cerny Brothers.
And yes, his facility at Hollywood’s famed Ocean Way Recording – complete with a prized Trident 80b board — may be a mixer’s dream come true.”
Ocean Way is a prestigious company with a long legacy of producing award-winning albums for major artists. Its roots go back to the original United Western Studios constructed in 1952, which yielded some of America’s best recordings of the 1960s and 1970s (including The Beach Boys’ “Good Vibrations”, Ray Charles’ version of “I Can’t Stop Loving You”, The Mamas & the Papas’ “California Dreamin'”, and Frank Sinatra’s “It Was a Very Good Year”).
Since those early days, the Ocean Way family has grown to include ten studios, a mastering room, Classic Equipment Rentals, OWR To Go, Ocean Way Drums, and Ocean Way Monitor Speakers. Matt Linesch became a mentor for the Recording Connection earlier this year, and we couldn’t be more pleased to be sending our students to such a skilled engineer at this world-renowned studio!
“Mixing is such an art form that I feel it takes a lifetime of trial and error to master.” – Matt Linesch
