Issue #26
by L. Swift and Jeff McQ
It doesn’t seem that long ago that Krysten Dean was apprenticing with the Recording Connection under Joey Heier at Crystal Clear Studio in Philadelphia, PA. Since graduating, she’s concentrated on doing live sound, and recently landed the gig of a lifetime: running live sound operations for Jay Z and Beyoncé for their “On the Run” tour!
The stadium tour, which has been hailed by critics for its state of the art sound and lighting effects, began in June at Sun Life Stadium in Miami, FL, and is currently hitting major cities throughout the U.S. and Canada before closing out in September with a two-day stint in Paris, France. The tour is visually and narratively themed after the Jay Z song “Part II: On the Run,” and the setlist includes recent and signature hits from both superstars.
Krysten credits much of her current success to her time spent with the Recording Connection. “Thank you for getting me started and thank you for believing in me,” she says. “It all started learning from you!” Congratulations, Krysten!
This internationally known radio personality got his start at age 24 as a janitor in a radio station in Florida!

Recording Connection mentor Joey Heier tells a story about how an aspiring young rap artist named Tayyib Ali came into his studio about five years ago, referred by Duck Down Records in New York City. During their first session, Ali referred to Crystal Clear as “The nicest studio I’ve ever been in,” continuing, “I want to make this studio my home.” Though Ali could not afford further sessions at the time, Joey saw his potential as a big-time artist and agreed to bring him in on talent alone, provided that Ali would spread the word about Crystal Clear Studio as the place where he got his start.
Since then, Tayyib Ali has been named one of the “Top Ten Teen Rappers” and has become widely known for his Keystone State of Mind series of recordings. He’s currently signed to Def Jam Records, and is currently out on tour! Be sure to check out one of his shows!
