Welcome to the Film Connection Digital Information Kit.

The videos below were created to answer frequently asked questions from parents and students about how our unique film apprenticeship programs work.  We realize our approach differs from most other schools.  We strongly believe our approach — the mentor/apprentice approach — works, especially if your goal is to get a job in the film business, or make it as a filmmaker.

The Film Connection Apprenticeship ProgramFilm Connection is the school that connects its students with film industry professionals who serve as their private instructors.  We call them mentors. If you want to be a film director, we pair you with a working, professional film director.  If you want to be a film producer, we pair you with a professional film producer.  If you want to become a screenwriter, we pair you with professional screenwriters who have written movies you’ve seen and loved.  The Film Connection places you in real working situations with private instruction from professionals who make their living doing what you want to do upon graduation — Make Movies! We do it this way because it’s what works in the real world.

The Film Connection is a member of the BBB with an A rating. We feel that if you invest the 20 minutes it will take you to view these videos, you too will see why our approach not only makes sense, but works so well for our graduates.

Where & How You Learn

We believe the best way to learn filmmaking and the job skills necessary to be employable in the film business is to learn on real film sets and in real film production companies. And that’s exactly where we place you when you enroll with the Film Connection. While other schools place their students in overcrowded classrooms, far away from the realities of how the film business works, with us you are learning from professionals in real companies.

In addition, you will be paired with a legendary Hollywood screenwriter or producer, one who has written or made movies you have seen and loved. This second mentor helps you write your screenplay idea into a professional screenplay or pitch.

As you are doing the above, you are also directing three films.

All of this leads to you graduating with a solid film, script, or pitch of your very own movie idea. You then fly out to either Los Angeles or New York City, where we set you up with your very own private meeting with a film producer who has the power to get your movie made.

The Three Learning Phases

The Three Learning Phases

The Three Phases of Our Curriculum

The Film Connection filmmaking curriculum is broken down into three phases.

Phase One pairs you with a local filmmaker in your city, within easy commute distance of where you live. This professional filmmaker will mentor you on film sets and inside the film production company where he or she works while teaching you the creative and production aspects of filmmaking. It is here in Phase One that you will direct your three films, learn lighting, staging, framing, editing, film history, production design, and every other aspect of general film production.

Phase Two is a series of one-on-one meetings with a legendary Hollywood screenwriter or producer with real feature film credits – movie credits you have heard of! You will work one-on-one with this screenwriter/producer to develop your “big idea” for a movie or TV show (or documentary) into a professional screenplay and/or a professional pitch. Please note how rare an opportunity this is. The Film Connection is placing you with a legendary professional who is mentoring you one-on-one to get your very best movie idea out of your head, and onto the page.

Phase Three is the opportunity of a lifetime. You’ll fly to New York or Los Angeles where you get to pitch/present the movie idea you’ve been working on (in Phase Two) to a well-known Hollywood film producer in a private meeting. Not only will you gain insight into how the movie business really works, you will get specific notes on your movie idea. And if you have what it takes, you may even sell your idea!

He has introduced me to the inner workings of film production machine, and I have learned so much! Evan Astrowsky, Producer of Cabin Fever, FanBoys, ZomBeavers“I went to a good film school, but the day I graduated I had no idea what to do. No one wanted to hand me thousands of dollars to direct or produce anything so I had to figure it out on my own. The Film Connection does the figuring out for you. Learn while you network, I don’t understand why more film schools don’t adopt this type of program. It makes a ton of sense.”

Paul Guay, writer of Liar Liar“The FC program is one-on-one. It’s a mentorship situation, so the mentor is able to kind of assess rather quickly, what are your strengths, what areas that you need to be strengthened in, what are the challenges facing your particular idea. That kind of one-on-one attention is something that you’re not going to get elsewhere. Any information that you can get from people on the inside who have made a living at it, can only be helpful.”

Real Parents Speak on our School and Unique Method of Learning:

Tanya Price“There are some things books can’t teach you and that was one of our draws to the Recording Radio Film Connection. Our daughter was able to learn everything and her mentor would go out of his way to take her places, show her things, and educate her. It was a great environment for her to learn independently.” Tanya Price

“For a long time now I have been saddened by the debt statistics for new graduates so I was completely on board with the focused training and affordable cost of the program. They work with many successful artists which illustrates the validity of the program. I am a nurse and an educator and feel that you have the absolutely correct philosophy when it comes to the impact of real world learning. I have confidence that when Alexa has completed this program, she will have a marketable skill that will provide her with many opportunities and a bright future. A big thank you to the Recording Radio and Film Connection!” Dee Cooper

“Sometimes timing kicks in, and it is a blessing. Thank you, Recording Radio Film Connection, for all your support, it means a lot.” Leslie Messina
